Ancient traditions associated with Somnath connect the sacred site with the story of Chandra, the Moon God, who is said to have worshipped Bhagvan Shiva at Prabhas Teerth and received relief from a curse.
The Shree Somnath Trust's historical account describes repeated rebuilding of the temple across different periods. In the modern reconstruction, Sardar Patel's resolve following his visit to the temple ruins in 1947 became an important part of the reconstruction story.
The foundation stone of the new temple was laid on 8 May 1950, and the Pran-Pratistha of the existing temple took place on 11 May 1951.
According to the Trust, the fully reconstructed temple was dedicated to the nation on 1 December 1995.
